Understanding Ob-Gyn Visits: What To Expect

The whole concept of seeing a gynecologist for an OB-GYN visit in San Dimas, CA, can be quite scary. Though the appointment varies slightly based on the purpose, we can assure you that Dr. Richard Williams of Williams Ob/Gyn & Associates strives to make you feel as comfortable as possible.  That is why, right now, we would like to ease your mind, so you know what to expect.

Filling Out Paperwork

The first step to your visit is filling out your medical history report, which will include questions about your primary care physician, sexual history, reproductive history, and more. This will be whether you are here for birth control, a routine screening, pregnancy, or another reason. All this information helps us diagnose and treat the issue or plan your treatment approach.

Discussing Concerns

When you have an OB-GYN visit in San Dimas, CA, part of the appointment will include talking to you directly about any questions or concerns you have. We will answer any questions accurately and help you fully understand.

Internal Examination

Though this depends on your age and the reason you are here, an internal examination may be part of the visit. This portion of the exam may consist of our practitioner looking at your vagina, cervix, and vulva to look for any visible signs of a problem. We may recommend one for teens if this is their first visit. After that, we may recommend one if you are 21 or older. The doctor may perform an internal if you are pregnant also.

During this part of the exam, our doctor will insert gloved fingers into the vagina and will reach toward the cervix. The doctor may even press on your abdominal region to find the uterus and ovaries and assess them. Though how often we recommend it depends on your age and other risk factors, we may suggest a Pap smear. During this test, our physician will obtain a sample of the cervical cells. The cells are sent to the lab and analyzed to check for potential abnormalities, including precancer and cancer.

Discussing Vaccinations and Pregnancy Prevention

Part of the treatment may consist of our doctor asking you about your current birth control. If you are not currently using a birth control method or would like a better option, we can discuss all this during your visit. Let's say you are trying to prevent STDs. We offer PrEP for AIDS and the papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
